What is the difference between CV and Resume

There are a lot of misunderstanding when it comes to resume and cv. Companies and institutions do know that students are uninformed, one of the major problems that a representative from one multinational company – SHELL precisely lamented to us during a conference earlier this year was that graduates were considered uninformed and not adaptable to the corporate world. Imagine a situation where you were asked to submit a resume and you submitted a CV, you just publicly announced that you are among the uninformed!

I am dedicating this 9fluxng article particularly to undergraduate students who will soon begin to submit applications for Internship positions in various firms. Unfortunately, I was a victim of this circumstance, not knowing the difference between cv and resume, always thinking that both of them can be used interchangeably.

Enough of stories, what is the difference between CV and resume?

Enough of stories,

So what is the difference between a CV and a resume?

What is a  CV – Curriculum Vitae

A CV is a brief history of a person, more like a chronological description of a persons life – his education, work experience, goals, background, achievements, bio data and personal information. It takes usually more than one page that is about 2-3 pages to create a cv.

One of the major differences between a CV and a resume is in their length. A CV is longer than a resume and contains more details than a resume.

What are the contents of a cv?

Your curriculum vitae should include your name, contact information, education, skills, and experiences (for a student, you may not have work experience so be sure to add some leadership experiences, duties and peculiar activities performed).

In addition to the basics, a CV can include awards like scholarship won, professional certifications, associations and licenses, mentions , and other information relevant to the position you are applying for.(mbscholars property) Start by making a list of all your background information, and then organize it into various categories. What is a resume?

A resume is more like a brief and concise summary of your education, work history, credentials, and other accomplishments and skills relevant to the application in question. A resume should not actually contain irrelevant information like your primary school education instead include only your latest and highest level of education. It is limited to only a page without a lot of extraneous information. It is always recommended that you remove experiences that is older than 10 years if you have more recent  experience.

In complex situations, where many applicants submitted applications sometimes, employers use a software to scan through resumes so you should learn how to tailor your resume to be “organic” (We will talk about this later).

Longer than Resume (2-3 pages) Should be 1 page long
Full description of a person – his education, qualification, history, work experience etc Concise and tailored strictly to the application in question
Usually arranged in a chronological order No rules, content can be shuffled to suit application and highly customizable

Additional Tips when preparing your Resume

  • Try to add an online reference to your resume. Prefereably your LinkedIn account
  • Remove also the experience that is not related to the job you are applying for at the moment.
  • Use clear headings with simple designs
  • Try to use a template
  • Do not just mass produce CVs and resume. Prepare each one to suit the position you are applying for and only add details that will head towards that direction
  • Be concise and irresistible
